SHOULD STUDENTS BE ALLOWED TO GRADE THEIR TEACHERS?

 

 

          In this era of globalisation, the grading system has been introduced to many schools in Malaysia. This is because, the government needs to create a good relationship between the teachers and the students. The relationship is very important as the teachers are the persons who will shape and influence the studnets' mind. However, the question whether students should be allowed to grade their teachers or not is still being debated and argued until today.

          On one hand, I agree that students should be allowed to grade their teachers. They should grade them because they are students and they have the right to give out their opinion on their teachers. By having this grading system, the head of the school can see the true colour of the teachers so that they can plan any strategy in order to improve the good qualities in them. Therefore,the students will have better teachers in the future and occasionally improve their studies.

          However, on the other hand, I think that students should not be allowed to grade teachers because some young students have not yet develop their higher order thinking skill. These young students such as  primary 1 or 2 students do not really know how to evaluate their teachers because they have not become mature and are capable to think logically. Besides that, some students do not evaluate and grade their teachers honestly. For instance, they will give a good grade to those teachers whom they like or look pretty and handsome even though those teachers are very lazy. They do not grade the teachers based on their attitude as teachers, instead they grade them based on their appearance. Hence, the grading result will go against the true behaviour of the teachers and there will be no action taken to them in order to improve themsleves.

          Apart from that, the grading system can affect the relationship between the teachers and the students. When the teachers know the bad grades that have been given by their students, they will feel sad and even get mad or discontent. By keeping such feelings, the teachers will start to have bad feelings towards their students and thus, do not teach them well.

          In conclusion, I really disagree that the students should be allowed to grade their teachers because the grade will soon creat conflicts and brings bad effects to the teachers as well as the students.
